Managing Email Subscriptions in Outlook
And why it’s also a security check
Outlook can automatically detect newsletters and marketing emails, letting you unsubscribe or block senders without hunting for links inside the email. But here’s the catch: Outlook can sometimes misidentify regular messages as subscriptions.
That means your Subscriptions list isn’t just for decluttering — it’s also a security checkpoint. It can help you:
- Spot suspicious senders that slipped past the Junk folder
- Correct mistakes so important emails aren’t missed
- Keep your inbox lean and relevant
Classic Outlook for Windows (pre‑2023 desktop app)
Note: Classic Outlook does not have a central “Subscriptions” page. This feature is only available in New Outlook and Outlook on the web. In the classic version, you must manage unwanted senders directly from individual emails.
- Open Outlook (classic).
- Select an email from the sender you want to manage.
- Go to the Home tab → Junk → Junk E‑mail Options.
- Choose Block Sender to stop all future emails from them.
- If the email is a legitimate subscription, scroll to the bottom and use the unsubscribe link — but only if you trust the sender.
New Outlook for Windows (rolled out from 2023)
- Open New Outlook.
- Click the ⚙️ Settings icon (top right).
- In the search bar, type Subscriptions and select it.
- Review the list of senders Outlook has identified as subscriptions.
- Click Unsubscribe for trusted senders you no longer want to hear from.
- If the sender looks suspicious or the unsubscribe link opens an unfamiliar site, use Block instead (via the … menu on the email).
- If Outlook mislabels an important sender, click … → This is not a subscription.
Outlook on the Web (Outlook.com / Microsoft 365)
- Sign in at Outlook.com.
- Click the ⚙️ Settings icon.
- Search for Subscriptions and open the page.
- Unsubscribe from trusted senders directly from this list.
- For suspicious senders, select the message → Junk → Block.
- Correct mistakes by selecting … → This is not a subscription.
When to Block Instead of Unsubscribe
- The sender is unknown or suspicious.
- The unsubscribe link takes you to an unfamiliar website.
- You never signed up for the emails.
Blocking stops the sender without you interacting with potentially unsafe links.
Why Check Your Subscriptions List Regularly
- Catch mislabelled emails — prevent important messages from being hidden.
- Spot junk or phishing attempts — block them before they cause harm.
- Declutter your inbox — remove old newsletters you no longer read.
- Reduce risk — avoid clicking unsafe unsubscribe links.
- Improve search and performance — a cleaner inbox is easier to manage.
